The ties that bind

On the evening of Sunday March 17, 1986, in the Guipúzcoa village of Zaldibia, a six-year-old boy released a dove into the air before his uncle's coffin. The child's gesture went virtually unnoticed as cries of "Gora ETA!" - viva ETA - resounded through the village, and mourners listened to speeches by José María Olarra and Itziar Aizpurua, leaders of ETA's political wing, now known as Batasuna.
